Bugatti Tourbillon Hybrid Powertrain Redefines Hypercar Speed

In Episode 08 of Bugatti’s ‘A New Era’ documentary series, engineers unveil the Tourbillon hybrid hypercar and its revolutionary powertrain on the Bugatti YouTube channel. They marry a naturally aspirated 8.3-litre V16 engine to three high-revving electric motors, forging a fresh performance benchmark for hybrid hypercars. Far from replacing combustion, the electric motors amplify the V16’s visceral soundtrack with instant torque, creating a richer driving experience.

The complete drivetrain, which includes an eight-speed double-clutch gearbox with a torque-vectoring differential and a 250-kilowatt rear motor spinning to 24,000 rpm, weighs only 430 kilograms—no heavier than the Chiron engine alone. A dedicated front electric axle packs two independent motors and dual inverters into one compact unit, preserving design purity and optimal packaging.

Despite greater capability, the Bugatti Tourbillon hybrid powertrain makes the hypercar lighter than its predecessor yet faster, with a higher top speed and more luggage room. Engineers achieve this by scrutinising every gram, even 3D-printing topologically optimised suspension parts that weigh 45 per cent less than previous components.

The 800-volt electric motors not only start the engine but also generate power, eliminating the need for a 12-volt system and allowing the V16 to recharge the battery while on the move. A 25 kWh T-shaped battery, comprising more than 1,500 oil-cooled cells, is integrated into the chassis, enhancing rigidity, balancing weight, and providing an electric range exceeding 60 km.

This intelligent integration reduces the car’s footprint, allowing the Tourbillon to retain a low, elegant silhouette with its trademark short overhangs while accommodating the longer V16, twin front motors, larger cooling circuits, and extra luggage capacity. Episode 08, alongside earlier instalments of the ‘A New Era’ series, streams exclusively on the Bugatti YouTube channel, inviting viewers to witness the next chapter in hybrid hypercar performance.
