Bentley Flying Spur Debuts Hand-Painted Ombré by Mulliner
Bentley applies its exclusive ‘Ombré by Mulliner’ paint finish to a four-door saloon for the first time, blending two distinct colours across the length of the car. Skilled artisans in the Paint Shop at Bentley’s Dream Factory in Crewe, England, hand-paint the effect so the shades flow seamlessly along the sides and roof, elevating the Flying Spur’s presence.
The new Flying Spur transitions from vibrant Topaz Blue at the front to deeper Windsor Blue at the rear, with the fade running through the mid-section across doors, sills and roof. Two highly trained paint technicians execute the process in nearly 60 hours. They begin by spraying the individual colours at the front and rear, then build the transition in stages across the centre using traditionally mixed, tinted paint to achieve the Ombré effect, ensuring perfect symmetry on both sides.
Bentley also offers two additional Ombré colourways: Sunburst Gold to Orange Flame, and Tungsten to Onyx. Because each paint behaves differently in application, the team has curated combinations that guarantee a smooth, uniform fade and prevent unintended secondary colours from appearing, such as green from yellow meeting blue. The technicians constantly monitor the paint’s reaction during spraying and adjust with precision, ensuring that every Mulliner commission remains unique yet flawless to the eye.
The Ombré Flying Spur makes its debut as part of Bentley’s presence at the Southampton International Boat Show, which starts tomorrow and runs until 28 September. The car that follows the first model to showcase this technique is a Continental GT, which appeared at this year’s “The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering” during Monterey Car Week. Bentley will announce further colour combinations in due course, expanding the bespoke options for customers who value hand-crafted luxury and distinctive two-tone paintwork.
