Hyundai Mobis Targets Connected Cars With 5G Telematics Solution
On the 21st, Hyundai Mobis announced that it is developing a 5G telematics solution to strengthen its automotive electronics business in the mobility sector. The company calls the solution MTCU (Multi-function Telematics Control Unit). It uses 5G wireless communication and integrates the antenna into the unit. Telematics brings driver convenience features into vehicles by combining information technology with communications. It supports functions such as driving route guidance, accident and theft detection, and remote control.
As the industry transitions from 4G to 5G, companies face tougher competition in the mobility market. Many suppliers now focus on high-specification, multi-functional telematics products. Most vehicles worldwide still run telematics functions over 4G mobile networks. Hyundai Mobis also mass-produces and supplies 4G-based telematics products today.
"To achieve rapid market entry in the next-generation connected car service sector, we will complete product development by the first half of this year and secure market leadership in the global market," said Jung Soo-Kyung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Automotive Electronics Business Unit at Hyundai Mobis.
Hyundai Mobis positions its 5G telematics solution as next-generation connected car technology. Global automakers are already developing mass-production applications that leverage 5G to enhance connected-car services. 5G telematics can support high-precision map services, remote control for autonomous driving, and ultra-high-definition streaming.
With 4G-based communication, vehicles typically support services such as over-the-air (OTA) updates, car-to-home services that connect vehicles to smart homes, and infotainment content streaming. Industry leaders also recognise this 5G-based control solution as essential for the shift towards Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs).
Hyundai Mobis eliminates the need for external antennas by integrating antenna functionality into the built-in controller. The design helps deliver a sleeker vehicle appearance. Hyundai Mobis plans to enhance its competitiveness in global order wins by combining its telematics system development capabilities, mass-production experience, and communication technology.
Hyundai Mobis also collaborates with mobile communication modem specialists, including Korea's AM, to secure early access to market-leading technology.
Hyundai Mobis showcased the newly developed product at CES 2026, held in the US this month. The company promoted the 5G telematics solution to global customers and aims to expand orders.
