Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon Debuts With Exposed Carbon Body
Ford unveils the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon at Laguna Seca Raceway today, a fitting stage to show how race-inspired lightweight carbon fibre shapes its body, styling and performance. The new trim broadens the Mustang GTD range and puts exposed carbon front and centre to underline its track focus.
Top-flight series such as IMSA favour carbon fibre for race car bodies, and the Mustang GT3 that inspired the Mustang GTD competes there. The Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon skips the paint shop to amplify aerodynamic, race-derived style without giving up extreme on-track performance. The look serves a purpose. Removing paint and replacing the door sheet metal with bonded carbon fibre saves about 13 pounds compared to a Mustang GTD Carbon Series with the Performance package.
“Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon is the ultimate expression of the Mustang GTD’s high-tech, high-performance construction and is a reminder of the race-derived, cutting-edge capability that sits beneath the surface of every Mustang GTD,” said Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall. “ Mustang GTD is a great-looking car, and now it stands out even more with its striking exposed carbon body and functional aero elements.”
As with the Carbon Series, the carbon weave of the bonnet, roof, rear deck and rear wing aligns perfectly down the midline. The front wings and side panels also align with the dorsal elements to create a cohesive pattern across the carbon-fibre bodywork. The Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon features a unique black Brembo brake calliper, paired with an anodised body and gloss-black GTD script. The Performance package is standard, as seen on the Mustang GTD Spirit of America.
“High performance requires high precision. When we were designing Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon, it was essential that these small details were present, because they speak to the care and attention required to both build a vehicle like Mustang GTD and to compete and win on the world’s stage with Mustang GT3," said Mustang GTD Design Manager Anthony Colard.
Inside, the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon stands out with black leather, Dinamica microfibre suede and Hyper Lime stitching on the seats, door panels, centre console, instrument panel and steering wheel. A reflective centre gradient runs down the middle of the seats to add a bright highlight to the purposeful, focused cabin.
The arrival of Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon alongside the standard model, Spirit of America and Carbon Series lets Mustang GTD owners choose as much or as little exposed carbon fibre as they want.
The first Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon delivery is scheduled for October.
