Volvo ES90 Enters Production: Electric Saloon for Europe
Volvo Cars has started production of the new, fully electric Volvo ES90 for European markets, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards a fully electric future. The premium electric car expands Volvo’s EV lineup, signalling faster progress toward zero tailpipe emissions.
Designed for a life in balance, the ES90 offers safety, technology and versatility in the sleek shape of a modern electric saloon. It debuts 800-volt technology, enabling a more extended range and faster charging than any previous electric Volvo, supporting confident long-distance driving and convenient rapid top-ups.
Volvo puts its pioneering safety technology at the core of the ES90 in a package that promises another Scandinavian design classic from Volvo Cars. Next-generation core computing and the company’s Superset tech stack power the car, and continuous software updates will keep features and driving experience evolving with over-the-air improvements.
Volvo Cars has opened the ES90 order book across several European markets, and customer deliveries are expected to begin later this year. The ES90 will also soon reach each key market in the Asia Pacific, broadening availability for drivers seeking a refined electric vehicle with advanced safety and fast charging capabilities.
When Volvo unveiled the ES90 in March, the car clearly carved out a new space for itself. It combines the refined elegance of a saloon with the adaptability of a fastback, while offering the spacious interior and higher ground clearance typically associated with SUVs.
By blending the best of these three segments, the ES90 stands in a class of its own, a versatile car that does not compromise on comfort or space. Drivers gain the everyday usability of an SUV, the clean aerodynamics of a saloon and the practical access of a fastback in one electric car.
As a fully electric car with zero tailpipe emissions, the ES90 reflects Volvo Cars’ broader commitment to sustainability, encompassing climate-neutral manufacturing, circular economy principles, and responsible business practices. Volvo produces the ES90 using climate-neutral energy at its Chengdu plant, and according to the company’s Life Cycle Assessment report* from July, the ES90 has one of the lowest carbon footprints of any Volvo car to date.
“The fully electric ES90 marks a major milestone as Volvo Cars steps into a new era of safety, sustainability and human-centric technology,” says Francesca Gamboni, chief industrial operations officer at Volvo Cars. “With production now underway, we’re reaffirming our commitment to a fully electrified future and proving our ability to innovate and meet customer demands.”
