Automobili Mignatta Rina: Carbon Monocoque Italian Speedster
Automobili Mignatta today reveals the first images of the JM-SM, a sophisticated carbon monocoque that forms the backbone of Rina, its prestigious two-seater speedster. The new chassis fuses Sixties sports cars' sinuous, timeless style with cutting-edge composite technology, delivering exceptional strength alongside remarkably low mass.
Engineers crafted the tub-like structure to integrate the driver and passenger seats while limiting weight to just 71 kg. JM—short for JM Super Monoscocca—produces the monocoque and draws on over twenty-five years of carbon-fibre expertise under the Automobili Mignatta banner. Designers prioritised passive safety and effortless cockpit access, achieving about 101,000 Nm/deg torsional rigidity and 2.24 kN/mm flexural stiffness, benchmark figures in modern automotive engineering. The adaptable layout comfortably accommodates varied mechanical configurations.
Andrea Chiumello, Chief Engineer of Rina’s monocoque, states, “Using advanced virtual simulations, it was possible to optimise the performance of the monocoque significantly. The JM-SM is a structure characterised by extraordinary rigidity, both in terms of flexural and torsional stiffness, resulting from a smart use of carbon fibre and lamination techniques. The construction also benefits from an optimal use of filling materials, like foams and honeycombs, to ensure a minimum overall weight.”
Beneath its carbon-fibre body, Rina conceals a front-mid-mounted, naturally aspirated V8 that couples to a six-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip rear differential, guaranteeing a pure analogue driving experience. Extensive composite construction keeps dry weight near 1,000 kg, granting the Italian speedster an enviable power-to-weight ratio and dynamic poise rarely matched today.
Automobili Mignatta will unveil Rina in full on 8 May 2025 at Valfenera d’Asti in Piedmont, where craftsmen will hand-assemble a strictly limited run of thirty cars per year. A passionate collective stands behind the marque, united by an uncompromising vision for the automobile and working in perfect harmony to turn their shared dream into reality. The brand’s Piedmontese roots appear in its emblem: a stylised ‘m’ that echoes the three-drop blue lambello from the region’s historic banner, bestowed in 1424 by Amadeus VIII, the first Duke of Savoy, for the Prince of Piedmont.
