GM Returns to Woodward Avenue With Hudson’s Detroit HQ

Detroit is the beating heart of General Motors. It has stayed that way since GM opened its original Detroit home on Woodward Avenue in 1911. Today, the company is returning to Woodward Avenue and starting a bold new era.

General Motors’ new global headquarters in Detroit is more than an office building. It stands as a symbol of the company’s relentless drive forward. It draws on more than a century of automotive innovation and the undefeated spirit of Detroit’s resurgence. This cutting-edge space aims to inspire, empower and propel GM into an extraordinary automotive future.

GM Design shaped the new global headquarters with vision and purpose. The space reflects the signature flair and forward-thinking that have always defined General Motors. The architecture references Eero Saarinen's iconic work at GM’s Global Technical Centre in Warren, Michigan. It also integrates dynamic installations from leading contemporary artists, including Detroit’s own Harry Bertoia.

General Motors highlights its continued dedication to Detroit throughout the building. Visitors can step into the lobby at Entrance One, a tribute to the iconic J.L. Hudson Department Store that once stood on this ground, and see a showcase of GM’s latest world-class vehicles. Here, the echoes of the past power the dreams of tomorrow, right on historic Woodward Avenue.

As the state’s largest automotive employer, General Motors strengthens Michigan, Detroit and the entire nation. GM accounts for about 4% of Michigan's GDP and directly contributed over $29 billion in 2024. Over the last decade, the company invested $17.3B in its home state. GM’s presence in Michigan includes 38 facilities, including 5 assembly plants, 210 dealers and 1,000 Tier 1 supplier locations.

The move to Hudson’s Detroit signals General Motors’ commitment to keeping America’s automotive excellence rooted in Michigan. The company is keeping the state at the forefront of global innovation. It is transforming facilities to lead every part of the automotive industry, from advanced manufacturing and pioneering software to the thrill of America’s sports car and the promise of next-generation autonomous technology.

General Motors is proud to help drive Detroit’s remarkable resurgence. The company is leading with bold investments, innovative partnerships and cutting-edge vehicles. At Hudson’s Detroit, GM is ready to create the future of transportation as only the Motor City can.
