Gordon Murray Group Awarded King’s Award for innovation

Gordon Murray Group, the renowned British automotive engineering firm, has secured a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of the revolutionary Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 supercar. The honour underscores how the lightweight T.50, the world’s lightest supercar at only 997 kg, redefines performance by merging Formula One know‑how with original, driver‑focused design.

Engineers trimmed every gram to create a machine one‑third lighter than typical rivals while preserving remarkable practicality. The three‑seat cockpit offers 288 litres of luggage space—unmatched among supercars—within the segment’s most compact footprint. A bespoke 3.9‑litre V12 powers the car; at 178 kg it remains the lightest naturally aspirated road‑car engine ever and spins freely to 12,100 rpm, surging at a record 28,400 revs per second. Complementing the engine, a patented 400 mm rear‑mounted fan manipulates airflow to balance drag and downforce, enabling clean, sculptural bodywork free of ungainly wings.

These innovations serve a single aim: delivering “Driving Perfection”, the ethos at the heart of Gordon Murray Automotive. When the £2.36 million T.50 debuted in 2020, all 100 examples sold out within 48 hours, proving the global appetite for a supercar that combines ultralight engineering, fan‑assisted aerodynamics, and everyday usability.

“As a proud British business, it is such an immense honour for the Gordon Murray Group team to receive the King’s Award for Enterprise,” said Professor Gordon Murray CBE, company founder and Executive Chairman. “The fact that the award specifically recognises innovation is a source of great pride as we aspire to deliver Driving Perfection through our innovative production of highly exclusive supercars.”

Gordon Murray Group CEO Phillip Lee added: “Being a premium British company is a core part of our ethos and identity. It flows from our UK‑first supply chain to how we present ourselves to customers. This royal recognition will motivate us to deliver unique, innovative supercars of the highest quality to our discerning customers worldwide.”

Professor Murray will accept the award at a Royal Reception in Windsor Castle during the year that marks his 60th anniversary in automotive design. The milestone will take centre stage at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where Gordon Murray Automotive becomes the event’s Central Feature Marque. A striking sculpture and a parade of race and road cars will celebrate six decades of Gordon Murray’s engineering artistry, lightweight philosophy, and unrelenting pursuit of driving perfection.
