HORSE B20: Horse Powertrain Unveils Waterproof Hybrid Engine
Horse Powertrain, a global leader in innovative, low-emission hybrid and combustion powertrain solutions, has unveiled its fully waterproof engine, the HORSE B20.
Designed for extreme off-road use and deep-water wading, the HORSE B20 brings all-terrain capability to hybrid vehicles, including SUVs and pick-up trucks. It fully complies with IPX8 waterproofing standards so that it can operate at depths of up to 1.1 metres. It also maintains continuous, stable power output under extreme off-road, high-load conditions, including 100% gradient climbs.
Weighing just 130kg, the HORSE B20 is a four-cylinder, 2-litre inline petrol engine designed for HEV, PHEV, and REEV applications. It features a turbocharger and direct injection technology, delivering up to 140-185kW of power and 300-380Nm of torque. An advanced Miller cycle powers the engine, achieving a brake thermal efficiency of 48.4%.
The HORSE B20 packs a range of innovations that encourage leaner, cleaner combustion and maximise fuel economy and range. High-pressure injectors and high-tumble intake ports promote superior air-fuel mixing and more efficient combustion. The pistons also make full use of the 'squish' effect, promoting air-fuel mixing at the peak of the compression cycle – this lets the spark plug ignite a cleaner, faster combustion event.
Beyond the cylinders, the HORSE B20 relies on several further innovations. A gantry-type aluminium block with an integrated exhaust manifold and a simplified balance shaft system improve NVH, durability, and overall efficiency. A variable displacement oil pump also ensures optimal oil flow and pressure throughout the engine.
To boost cooling efficiency, an exclusive, fully active dual-cooling system keeps the unit at its optimal operating temperature, even under extreme conditions such as continuous slope climbing and long, high-temperature runs.
To achieve its IPX8 waterproof rating, the engine uses a fully sealed, waterproof structure fitted with torsional vibration dampers and dedicated engine-transmission sealing. IPX8-rated electrical components and sensors continuously monitor the engine's surrounding operating environment. When the engine submerges in water, the control system automatically adjusts power output or throttle response based on sensor feedback, ensuring stable operation under deep wading conditions.
Ingo Scholten, Deputy Chief Technology Officer of Horse Powertrain, said: 'The HORSE B20 demonstrates how we are meeting the full range of market needs, delivering flexible engine and powertrain solutions designed for multiple use cases and applications. Supporting HEV, PHEV and REEV platforms, the HORSE B20 enables new opportunities across a range of vehicle categories - particularly off-road applications, due to the engine's waterproofing and climbing capabilities. This engine is another step forward in advancing modern powertrain technology and a further example of how Horse Powertrain is pushing our industry forward.'
Horse Powertrain first showcased the HORSE B20 at the Beijing Auto Show 2026. It has since powered a PHEV powertrain in the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 off-road vehicle (China only), paired with the HORSE 3DHT230, a three-speed intelligent hybrid transmission.
