McLaren W1 1:8 Model by Amalgam: Handcrafted Detail

A new chapter in McLaren’s ‘1’ car bloodline continues on the road and in miniature. Today, Amalgam Collection unveiled its 1:8 scale model of the new McLaren W1. It is a definitive handcrafted replica that took over 3,000 hours to develop in direct collaboration with McLaren Automotive in Woking, England.

The model measures over 57cm (22 inches) in length. Each 1:8 scale model needs more than 300 hours of careful hand assembly and finishing by Amalgam’s artisans in Bristol. Amalgam builds it using the original CAD designs, paint codes and material specifications that McLaren supplied. The replica includes working scissor doors, an operational remote-control rear wing, and a fully detailed interior with accurate aerodynamic surfaces. The 1:8 scale McLaren W1 model captures the car’s shape, engineering intent and theatre that define McLaren’s next-generation hypercar.

McLaren will limit full-scale W1 production to 399 examples worldwide, priced from approximately £2 million each. The 1:8 scale model gives owners a singular way to preserve their precise build specification in permanent, perfectly executed form. Collectors increasingly treat these exact replicas as part of a vehicle’s documented provenance. They become tangible artefacts within the ownership story, and they can strengthen the narrative, authenticity, and ultimately the long-term value of the overall investment.

The W1 joins the iconic McLaren F1 and the hybrid-era McLaren P1 in McLaren’s most exclusive lineage, cars that represent technological milestones and significant long-term investments. As values of the F1 and P1 have strengthened over time, collectors have placed greater importance on provenance and originality. Many now see exact 1:8 scale replicas as part of a vehicle’s documented history and as physical records of its original specification at the point of delivery.

Sandy Copeman, Founder of Amalgam Collection, comments: “Both the P1 and F1 have become great investments for collectors, and what we are finding is that having an exact 1:8 scale model which replicates the car becomes part of that car's history and is now just as important as having the service history, original build specification documentation or even the luggage set, in terms of maximising the value of the car and investment for the owner. In recent times, Amalgam models are becoming alternative investments for collectors of cars and artwork due to their holding their value.”

Amalgam engineers each 1:8 scale W1 directly from McLaren’s digital design data to ensure absolute dimensional accuracy. The team matches paint finishes precisely to factory standards. They also reproduce interior materials and exposed carbon fibre textures with exceptional fidelity, so the scale hypercar model mirrors the real car’s finish and detail.

Amalgam offers two commissioning options. The launch specification comes finished in the colour (Papaya Spark) in which the W1 was unveiled on 6 October 2024. This edition is limited to 199 pieces and priced from £14,995. The bespoke, ‘Tailor Made’ owner commission replicates an individual owner’s exact vehicle configuration using factory build sheets supplied directly from McLaren to Amalgam, with pricing from £20,995.

You can order both the launch specification and Tailor Made commissions directly from Amalgam Collection through their global sales team, or through the McLaren dealer network.
