Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung: A Track-Focused Icon

AMG built the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung for one reason: driving dynamics. This road-legal coupé pairs a 646 hp (475 kW) V8 biturbo engine with pure rear-wheel drive, a significant weight reduction and a precision-tuned chassis. A wide-body design, wider tracks, and extensive carbon-fibre panels further sharpen its dynamic potential. AMG's artisans hand-build each car at the brand's Affalterbach headquarters to full manufactory standard.

'For me, the Mercedes‑AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung represents the very essence of AMG. This vehicle came to life because highly rational engineers dreamed of a highly irrational car. We turned that dream into reality in the form of maximum driving dynamics and an unparalleled driving experience.' Dr Stefan Weckbach, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class & Mercedes‑Maybach Business Units.

'The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung sets new benchmarks with its uncompromising presence and driving dynamics. Through extensive use of carbon fibre, we created a particularly distinctive appearance. Its bold proportions and the sheer size of the grille underscore the ambition to present a vehicle of extremes. The result is a masterpiece, full of performance and character.' Bastian Baudy, Chief Design Officer, Mercedes-Benz Group AG.

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung uses 15.8 l/100 km combined and emits 359 g/km CO2 (class G1). The PureSpeed uses 13.7 l/100 km and emits 312 g/km (class G2).

It started with a question: how far could AMG push a CLE towards maximum driving dynamics? No brief demanded it; an idea within the engineering team did. The team built a prototype first, then reimagined the whole car as a complete performance system, built on the current CLE Coupé and reworked with more power, a purpose-tuned chassis and serious lightweighting. AMG cut around 170 kg from the donor car, earning it the 'Spezialanfertigung' name.

At its core sits an enhanced AMG M177 EVO 4.0-litre V8 biturbo, producing 646 hp (475 kW) and 850 Nm from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. A flat-plane crankshaft cuts rotating mass and sharpens throttle response. Three separate cooling circuits, for the engine, the charge-air and transmission oil, and the 48-volt system, keep temperatures stable on track and in extreme heat. A bespoke exhaust, developed with Akrapovič and built largely from titanium, sharpens the soundtrack while trimming weight.

The biggest change sits in the drivetrain. AMG deletes the standard 4MATIC+ system entirely, so power reaches only the rear wheels. An electronic limited-slip differential manages torque between them, boosting traction and stability, and allowing controlled drifting. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G gearbox switches between rapid, aggressive shifts and near-imperceptible ones, and AMG has retuned Launch Control for rear-wheel drive. The result: 0-200 km/h in 11.4 seconds and a 310 km/h top speed.

A steel coil-over suspension, co-developed with KW automotive, uses four-way adjustable dampers with separate low-speed and high-speed settings, delivering sharp feedback and confident stability at the limit. The AMG Ceramic braking system resists fade under repeated track use: 420 x 40 mm discs and six-piston callipers up front, 360 x 32 mm discs and single-piston callipers at the rear, all finished in gold.

The reinforced, widened body adds 60 mm at the front and rear, improving stability and cornering while making room for much wider wheels and tyres. Carbon fibre forms the fenders, bonnet, roof, aprons, diffuser, boot lid and rear wing. Forged AMG wheels wear 305/30 ZR20 front and 335/30 ZR20 rear tyres, developed from Mercedes-AMG ONE technology. Mojave Silver Magno covers the front, Obsidian Black Magno the rear, and the ride height drops 22 mm at the front and 16 mm at the rear. Extra reinforcements and an integrated roll-over bar boost rigidity, sharpening precision on both road and track.

The aerodynamics work as one system. Drivers switch the front diffuser between 'Street' and 'Race', boosting front-axle downforce and steering feedback in Race mode. An adjustable rear wing, fender louvres, underbody fins and airflow channels beside the headlights add further downforce and improve brake cooling. In total, the package generates over 250 kg of downforce at top speed. With ESP off, AMG TRACTION CONTROL lets drivers dial in rear-axle wheel slip across nine stages.

Inside, AMG strips back weight and comfort: no rear seats, less sound insulation, a simplified stereo, and fewer buttons on the flattened, DINAMICA-wrapped steering wheel. Ultra-lightweight racing bucket seats, a roll-over bar and carbon-fibre door panels come as standard, with six-point harnesses available as part of the optional Performance Package.

AMG hand-builds every car in Affalterbach on a CLE 53 platform, continuing a manufactory tradition that stretches back to icons like the AMG 300 CE 6.0 'The Hammer'. The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the second model in the exclusive Mercedes-Benz Mythos Series, following the roofless PureSpeed. AMG limits this run to just 30 road-legal, track-focused examples, and it sold out before its world premiere.
