Hyundai and GM Unveil Five Co-Developed Models From 2028

Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors outlined their first five co-developed vehicles and marked a significant step in their strategic collaboration. The partners will deliver four models for Central and South America, including a compact SUV, a car, a pick-up and a mid-size pick-up, each engineered for internal combustion or hybrid propulsion. They will also co-develop an electric commercial van for North America to expand choice in the commercial EV market.

The companies expect annual sales to exceed 800,000 once production reaches full scale. GM will lead development of the mid-size truck platform, while Hyundai will head the compact vehicle family and the electric van. Both brands will share common platforms, then craft distinct interiors and exteriors that reflect their individual design languages.

Engineering and design teams have already begun work on the Central and South American range, scheduled to launch in 2028. The partners plan to manufacture the electric commercial van in the US as early as 2028 to serve fleet and small-business customers looking for lower running costs and zero-tailpipe-emission capability.

“Hyundai’s strategic collaboration with GM will help us continue to deliver value and choice to our customers across multiple vehicle segments and markets,” said José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “Our combined scale in North and South America helps us to more efficiently provide our customers more of what they want – beautifully designed, high-quality, safety-focused vehicles with technology they appreciate.”

Shilpan Amin, GM senior VP and global chief procurement and supply chain officer, said the new lineup targets the most significant segments in Central and South America, as well as the commercial segment in North America. “By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster, and at lower cost,” Amin said. “These first co-developed vehicles clearly demonstrate how GM and Hyundai will leverage our complementary strengths and combined scale.”

Beyond vehicle development, the companies will launch joint sourcing in North and South America for materials, transport and logistics to enhance supply-chain resilience and lower costs. They will also explore joint operations across raw materials, components and complex systems. Hyundai Motor and GM further agreed to investigate the use of low-carbon steel to support more sustainable manufacturing across shared platforms and future battery electric and hybrid models.

After signing a framework agreement in September 2024, both companies continue to assess additional joint vehicle development programmes for global markets, along with collaboration across propulsion systems, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, battery electric technology and hydrogen fuel cells. This Hyundai–GM collaboration aims to accelerate time to market, improve affordability and broaden customer choice across popular segments in the Americas.
