Rolls-Royce Phantom Hummingbird: Abalone Marquetry First
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presents Phantom Hummingbird, a Phantom Extended Private Commission that celebrates the intricate beauty of the natural world. A client commissioned the motor car as a tribute to his wife, and Private Office Dubai brought the vision to life. The name honours the hummingbird, a symbol of joy, resilience and the ability to find beauty in every moment.
Phil Fabre de la Grange, Head of Bespoke at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: “The natural world has always been a rich source of inspiration for Rolls-Royce Bespoke commissions, offering extraordinary forms and colours for our designers and craftspeople to interpret. Our clients continually invite us to explore that inspiration in new and unexpected ways, as this remarkable Private Commission so perfectly demonstrates. The introduction of abalone shell into Rolls-Royce marquetry presented our designers and craftspeople with a fresh creative and technical challenge, resulting in an elegant tribute to the hummingbird’s mesmerising presence.”
In a Rolls-Royce first, this Private Commission features marquetry crafted from abalone shell, a material prized for its extraordinary natural iridescence. The shell's nacreous inner surface catches the light and produces a hallmark blue-green lustre. Here, abalone joins mother-of-pearl to depict the shimmering feathers of the hummingbird, one of the most colourful creatures on earth. Microscopic structures within its feathers split and reflect light like tiny prisms, so flashes of colour shift with every viewing angle. A hand-painted hummingbird completes the exterior Coachline.
The delicate marquetry unfolds across two distinct compositions. On each Picnic Table, a hummingbird takes flight, and 53 individual pieces of abalone shell and mother-of-pearl make up each bird. The wings alone contain 18 pieces. On the Rear Waterfall panel between the two rear seats, a botanical motif of 84 pieces unfurls. The project took more than nine months to develop, and it tested both the material and the craftspeople who had to master it. Abalone shell is unusually fine and brittle, so the Bespoke Collective's designers, engineers and craftspeople spent much of that time perfecting how to cut, finish and seat each fragment within the veneer.
The team needed six iterations to find a suitable technique for this delicate material. In the final process, craftspeople first reduced the thickness of the pearl and abalone so they could set each fragment gently but firmly into place. They then lacquered every piece. This approach balances the beauty of the material with the longevity of a motor car that future generations will inherit.
Craftspeople laser-cut every piece of abalone shell and mother-of-pearl 0.06 mm larger than its final size to allow for the laser's own burn margin. They then file each piece to its precise shape by hand, working every edge until it meets its neighbour with no visible seam. This step proves essential for certain elements, particularly the hummingbird's wings, where only a human hand can achieve a sufficiently precise fit. After cutting and fitting, the craftspeople spent a further eight hours completing each Picnic Table and the Rear Waterfall panel, totalling 45 hours across the three panels.
A carefully curated colour palette complements the pioneering abalone marquetry throughout the interior suite. Ash Burr veneer forms the background across all three marquetry panels. Silver Birch plays an integral part in the Picnic Table motifs. The craftspeople cut it entirely from a single log, which they selected and examined minutely to ensure its grain pattern suited the composition.
Creme Light leather with Moccasin and Tan detailing trims the seating, while Seashell carpets sit beneath a Starlight Headliner.
The exterior echoes the interior theme. Wildberry covers the lower body and White Sands graces the upper body. A hand-applied White Sands Coachline traces the two-tone division, and along the generous length of the motor car, a hummingbird takes flight.
