Volkswagen ID.3 GTI: The Most Powerful GTI Ever Built
Volkswagen marks 50 years of GTI history with the world premiere of the new ID.3 GTI and reveals the first photos and facts. The electric ID.3 GTI is the most powerful series-production GTI Volkswagen has ever built. Its electric drive motor sends exactly 240 kW (326 PS) to the rear axle. A maximum torque of 545 Nm makes an even stronger impression. This gives the electric GTI superior punch in every situation. A highly efficient drive system adds ranges of up to 601 km. Like every true GTI, this compact athlete also offers flexible space and complete everyday usability. Volkswagen will open pre-sales in Germany at the beginning of 2027.
The ID.3 GTI will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, a time typical of sports cars. Standard Launch Control puts this acceleration onto the road without leaving black marks on the Tarmac. Volkswagen electronically limits the top speed to 200 km/h. Yet performance tells only part of the GTI story. The instant availability of maximum torque changes everything. Together with the DCC sports chassis and a low centre of gravity, it creates a new, pure and dynamic GTI experience.
A lithium-ion battery with a net capacity of 79 kWh feeds the electric motor in the rear axle. With DC rapid charging at up to 183 kW, the battery climbs from 10 to 80 per cent in about 29 minutes.
The ID.3 GTI wears its sporty design DNA with pride. Classic GTI insignia mark this Volkswagen, based on the ID.3 Neo, as the sporty flagship of the range. New standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights dominate the upper third of the front end. A transparent light strip with an illuminated VW logo links them. Directly above this strip, the designers placed the most familiar GTI feature of all: the red stripe. It echoes the red radiator grille frame of the very first Golf GTI from 1976. Vertical LED elements in the outer areas of the bumper form a new GTI signature and mark the model out as an electric GTI. Below them sits the high-gloss black honeycomb air intake grille, a classic GTI touch that manages the climate of the interior and the battery system. Two red vertical elements frame each outer edge. Together with the splitter-style front spoiler, they nod to motorsport.
New 20-inch alloy wheels, standard on every car, define the side view. Their name says it all: Wörthersee. Fans can read it as a tribute to the legendary GTI meet in Austria. High-gloss black mirror caps and side members add further GTI flair to the silhouette. From the side, the ID.3 GTI looks strikingly longer and sleeker than its predecessor, the ID.3 GTX. A new colour philosophy drives this change. The predecessor always carried a black roof, black roof spoiler and black boot lid. The GTI now wears the body colour in all these areas. This visually stretches the roofline, gives it a sportier look and lends the ID.3 GTI far more road presence.
Silver, black, red and white rank among the classic colours of every GTI, and the ID.3 GTI offers all four. A grey shade completes the palette. Buyers can choose from Tornado red solid, Moonstone grey solid, Scale silver metallic, Grenadilla black metallic and Glacier white metallic. Tornado red, colour code LY3D, has a fascinating history. Volkswagen first offered it on the facelifted first-generation Golf GTI, and fans regard it as ‘the’ quintessential GTI colour.
A highly individual interior sets the ID.3 GTI apart. Bespoke GTI touches appear in the equipment, seat designs and technical details. Red on black dominates the colour scheme. A fine red stripe, the GTI hallmark, runs across the full width of the dashboard. A red 12 o’clock marker on the new multi-function sports steering wheel signals that the ID.3 GTI ranks among the sportiest electric vehicles in its class. The same red appears on the premium sport seats. Their Superclark pattern reinterprets the tartan check of the first Golf GTI seats from 1976.
When the driver presses the illuminated GTI button at the six o’clock position on the new sports steering wheel, the new GTI driving profile springs to life. It comes as standard and joins the Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual profiles. GTI mode is the dynamic ‘secret sauce’ of this electric Volkswagen. It sets every drive and chassis parameter to maximum sportiness, including the power delivery of the electric motor, the progressive steering and the adaptive DCC sports chassis. It also unlocks the new Launch Control. At the same time, the background lighting switches permanently to red, the ID.Light flashes red briefly and the Digital Cockpit display changes to GTI mode. The power display with integrated speedometer now takes centre stage in the digital instruments. Meanwhile, the sound of a combustion engine plays in the background.
The cockpit of the ID.3 GTI builds on the new base vehicle, the ID.3 Neo. Volkswagen redesigned that interior, rethought its ergonomics, overhauled its technology and raised it to a new level of quality. These hallmarks now define the ID.3 GTI too. The new, larger Digital Cockpit and the large 32.77 cm (12.9-inch) touch display of the new Innovision infotainment generation share a single visual axis. A new button strip for the air conditioning and the hazard warning light switch sits below the infotainment display. Next to it, the centre console offers a practical rotary knob for volume and for skipping songs and stations.
Every option available for the ID.3 Neo will also come to the ID.3 GTI. The list includes a large panoramic sunroof, massage and memory functions for the premium sport seats, a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system, an augmented-reality head-up display and a removable bracket that lets owners mount a bicycle carrier on the tow bar (75 kg drawbar load).
The new vehicle-to-load function adds even more versatility and lets owners run or charge other devices. An adapter on the charging socket, the optional PowerSocket, makes this possible. That makes the ID.3 GTI ideal for weekend trips with two e-bikes. The bicycle carrier bracket transports them easily and safely, and the ID.3 GTI recharges them between rides. Optional assistance systems include a memory function for Park Assist Pro and the latest generation of Travel Assist. For the first time, this system for assisted lateral and longitudinal guidance also reacts to traffic lights. When Travel Assist detects a red light, it automatically brakes the Volkswagen to a standstill.
