United Autosports Mclaren Scores Points at Imola WEC
United Autosports defied expectations at Imola, steering the McLaren GT3 EVO to valuable FIA World Endurance Championship points. The team qualified fourth and fifth, progressed to the Hyperpole shoot-out and ultimately started eighth and ninth for the six-hour race.
Sean Gelael and Seb Baud managed early fuel-saving to cut pit-stop time. Their measured approach, designed for GT3 racing efficiency, initially dropped the cars down the order. A Safety Car later erased their fuel advantage; yet, both crews responded with a consistent pace.
Car 95 crossed the line to collect two crucial championship points, placing the McLaren GT3 EVO entries third and ninth in the standings. Richard Dean praised James Cottingham and Darren Leung, saying, “Their qualifying performances were top tier.”
Ian James added, “Fighting for a championship is all about taking points when you can, and that’s exactly what the drivers of the 95 car did.” He expects the fast, flowing Spa circuit to suit the United Autosports McLarens better, recalling their near-win there last season.
The squad now turns its focus to Spa-Francorchamps, determined to harness the McLaren GT3 EVO’s strengths and challenge for victory in round three of the FIA World Endurance Championship.
