YANGWANG U9 Xtreme Sets Nürburgring EV Lap Record
The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme already ranks as the fastest car on the planet, and BYD’s luxury sub-brand has now set another benchmark in electric supercar performance. Just a month after clocking a verified 496.22 km/h at ATP Papenburg, YANGWANG confirms a new Nürburgring lap record for Electric Super Sports Cars on the iconic Green Hell.
Engineers from YANGWANG conducted sustained development at the 20.832 km Nürburgring Nordschleife from July 2024, harvesting extensive on-track data to refine the U9 Xtreme. On 22 August 2025, the U9X lapped the Nordschleife in 6m59.157s, cutting more than five seconds from the previous class record and becoming the first electric super sports car to break the seven-minute barrier.
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said, "We are dedicated to pushing the limits of what can be achieved through technology, and the Nürburgring is such a legendary challenge for cars and drivers that it is only natural for our engineers to pursue their dreams there. I congratulate the entire team on this phenomenal achievement. The limited-edition U9 Xtreme has proven that it is not only the world's fastest car in a straight line, but also a vehicle with the performance and dynamic qualities necessary to break lap records on a circuit with a wide variety of corners."
Experienced German racer Moritz Kranz, who has completed almost 10,000 laps of the ultra-challenging Nordschleife in GT competition, drove the record lap. He said: "The Nürburgring Nordschleife is the most demanding track, and our lap time is a testament to the development skills of BYD and YANGWANG. Without their intense work to balance a high-powered EV platform with the difficult demands of the chassis set-up, this great lap time would not have been possible."
The U9 Xtreme sits on the world’s first mass-produced all-domain 1200 V ultra-high-voltage platform with four high-performance motors spinning up to 30,000 rpm. Combined output exceeds 3,000 PS, delivering a 1,217 PS-per-tonne power-to-weight ratio that establishes new global performance benchmarks for an electric super sports car.
Based on the e⁴ Platform and DiSus-X intelligent body-control system of the current YANGWANG U9, the U9 Xtreme introduces body-attitude control to track use, balancing ultimate top speed and rapid lap times in one package to elevate BYD’s electric vehicle technology.
To master the Nürburgring’s classic 20.832 km layout with steep elevation changes and demanding corners, the U9 Xtreme employs a fully re-engineered cooling system, a titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic braking system, and GitiSport e·GTR² PRO semi-slick tyres jointly developed with Giti. These upgrades enable excellence in both the 496.22 km/h top-speed run and the Green Hell lap record attempt, underlining the car’s durability and control on one of the world’s most rigid circuits.
YANGWANG now offers the U9 Xtreme to customers in a strictly limited series of 30 units or fewer. Its name derives from the English word ‘Extreme’, meaning ‘limit’ and ‘ultimate’, with added emphasis on the ‘X’, representing the unknown. These qualities align with YANGWANG’s ethos of joyful exploration and innovation, showcasing how BYD’s flagship electric supercar translates cutting-edge research into real-world speed and precision.
