Ferrari SC40: Bespoke One-off V6 From 296 GTB Lineage

Ferrari revealed a new One-Off from its Special Projects programme, the Ferrari SC40. Ferrari’s Styling Centre, led by Flavio Manzoni, designed this mid-rear-engined V6 using the architecture, chassis, and powertrain of the 296 GTB. With this commission, the SC40 enters the most exclusive part of the range, a realm of unique, tailor-made cars created around a single client’s brief and expressing Ferrari’s personalisation philosophy at its highest level.

The name honours the F40, the legendary Ferrari supercar first shown in July 1987. The SC40 mirrors that car’s sharp, angular lines while blending them with softer transitions to deliver a contemporary look and a strong, unmistakable identity.

The design stands entirely new and unique. The “SC40” script, engraved in relief on the wing, nods to the iconic supercar; yet, the team set out not to recreate it literally, but to craft a model with its own distinct personality.

Industrial design principles guide the styling theme, with precise geometries and muscular, squared volumes. Proportions pair a long, low nose with a short rear overhang and a high fixed rear wing, painted in bespoke SC40 White, that flows from the body’s flanks. The wing rises vertically from the engine cover and merges cleanly with it, a black separation line accentuating the black rear fascia. Open mesh exposes mechanical and structural components beneath.

Distinctive, smoked Lexan® louvres showcase the V6 and visually link to the lower air intake, echoed by smaller louvres carved into the muscular rear wings near the wheel arches. A sculpted rear section features a central exhaust produced via additive manufacturing with titanium and carbon-fibre tips, and tail-lights that clearly reference the 296 GTB on which the car is based.

In profile, intercooler air intakes reinterpret the classic NACA duct, emphasised by a large triangular carbon-fibre plate. Vertical lines set the visual rhythm, crisply defining the edges of the front wings, door cuts, and engine cover. These strokes form a subtle underlying grid that organises the car’s visual tension almost like a musical score.

At the front, the headlights are positioned at the outer corners within black housings that extend to meet a lower air intake spanning the entire bumper. This gives the car an assertive presence, strengthened by two rectangular frames that outline redesigned brake air intakes, with daytime running lights positioned above.

Inside, the team focused on Kevlar, a material that strongly recalls the F40. Reinterpreted carbon-Kevlar appears in the footwells, behind the seats, and on parts of the floor mats, and also features on the steering wheel, selected dashboard inserts, the engine bay, and the luggage compartment. Upholstery pairs Charcoal Alcantara® with a red Jacquard technical fabric, while the Prancing Horse on the headrests and the woven SC40 logo give the seats a contemporary and exclusive look.

SC40 White, specifically designed for this car, features a calm tone that accentuates the body’s curves in sunlight and evokes the carbon-Kevlar used within. The SC40 logo appears only on the right side of the vehicle. Aluminium fuel filler and charging caps carry a brushed finish. Ferrari lettering, rendered in negative on the rear engine cover, reveals the carbon beneath. Wheels designed exclusively for this model combine brushed metal on diamond-cut surfaces with black spokes to emphasise their geometric form.

A styling buck will go on display at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello from Saturday, 18 October.

Ferrari’s Special Projects programme creates unique Ferraris, known as One-Offs, with exclusive designs tailored to the client’s requirements. Each project begins with the client’s idea and is developed in collaboration with designers from Ferrari’s Styling Centre. After defining proportions and forms, the team produces detailed design blueprints and a styling buck before manufacturing the new One-Off. The process typically takes about 2 years, with the client closely involved in design reviews and verification. The result is a unique Ferrari bearing the Prancing Horse and engineered to the same standards of excellence as all cars from Maranello.

Based on the 296 GTB, the SC40 draws on formidable hybrid V6 credentials. The 120-degree, 2992 cm³ V6 uses 88 mm by 82 mm bore and stroke, revs to 8500 rpm, and runs a 9.4:1 compression ratio. The internal-combustion engine produces 663 cv, while the combined hybrid output reaches 610 kW (830 cv) at 8,000 rpm, with a maximum torque of 740 Nm at 6,250 rpm. A 7.45 kWh high-voltage battery supports the hybrid system. Dimensions reflect compact, purposeful packaging: 4700 mm long, 1975 mm wide, and 1198 mm high, with a 2600 mm wheelbase and front and rear tracks of 1665 mm and 1642 mm, respectively. Dry weight stands at 1550 kg, yielding a 1.87 kg per CV dry weight to power ratio and a weight distribution of 41.5 per cent front and 58.5 per cent rear.

The fuel tank holds 65 litres. Tyres measure 245/35 ZR 20 J9.0 at the front and 305/35 ZR 20 J11.0 at the rear, working with carbon-ceramic brakes of 398 x 223 x 38 mm at the front and 360 x 233 x 32 mm at the rear. An 8-speed F1 DCT manages power delivery. Electronic controls include eSSC with eTC, eDiff, SCM, FDE 2.0, EPS, ABS Evo, and 6w-CDS, as well as high-performance ABS/EBD with energy recovery. Performance targets exceed 330 km/h, with 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 7.3 seconds, and braking from 200 to 0 km/h in 107 metres.

This One-Off Ferrari SC40 blends bespoke design, advanced aerodynamics, and 296 GTB hybrid technology to deliver a singular supercar that embodies Maranello’s craft and innovation.
